Norman Elford
|
Norman is well known for his detailed and precise paintings of marine and transport subjects in acrylics and oils, many of which are based on local themes.
Born in Portsmouth, his interest in the Railway scene was sparked off by five years spent in reading as an evacuee in a house right next to a vital railway line. In hindsight it may not have been the safest place for a small boy but none the less exciting for a little boy who could draw!
Returning to Portsmouth in 1945 he completed his education at Portsmouth Northern Grammar School before studying painting for four years at what was then the Southern College of Art, Portsmouth. After a final year teacher training in Bournemouth, he served three years in the Royal Army Educational Corps in Korea and Cyprus.
After teaching art in the city for thirty two years, Norman took up painting full time and has since had a number of successful one man exhibitions. He has exhibited frequently with the Guild, designed decorative plates for Royal Doulton and Spode, produced thirty paintings for railway calendars and has completed many private commissions. His prints of local maritime scenes are in many homes and he has recently exhibited with the royal Society of Marine Artists at the Mall Galleries.
Sadly, Norman died earlier this year. He will be missed by many but his memory lives on through his work.
